WEEKLY CALENDAR

REFLECTION

I will admit I started to lose my momentum about two weeks ago during the mid-terms. The frustration that I have been experiencing in my attempt to comprehend math is the direct reason for this loss in motivation. I’m just not getting it!
The biggest mistake that I have made this semester is enrolling into math as a “Distance Education Course,” which means, the course is conducted entirely online. I have learned that math is one of those subjects that should be taken in a classroom. It is ludicrous to think otherwise, at least this is the situation in my case. I have decided that I will definitely have to reinforce my math skills by reviewing the math formulas on a daily basis, although there must be hundreds of them. Maybe I am exaggerating, or am I?
Although I have become a little discouraged in math, my motivation remains strong in the other three courses I have this semester, two of them of which, are in business. I am very comfortable and have extensive knowledge in business; therefore, my business courses keep me motivated to achieve my goals in getting a business degree for my future, which keeps my motivation thriving.
There is just one other course I am enrolled this semester and that is Read 096. What keeps my motivation so strong in reading is due to good teaching. I sincerely mean this from the bottom of my heart. The instructor who teaches Reaad 096 is Ms. Bogan and she not only motivates her students, but she teaches her students how to learn as well. Ms. Bogan has a true passion for teaching and it is a great thing to see. I am fortunate to have the chance to be a student in one of her courses.
Unfortunately, you can’t get the same motivation from an online math course. You are basically learning from a computer. Even though I will do everything possible to regain my motivation in math by using time management skills, applying what I have learned and review… review… review…. All skills that I have learned this semester in Ms. Bogan’s Read 096 course.
In closing, next time I am contemplating on taking a course, I will definitely weigh the pros and cons on whether to take the course online or on campus.

LETTER TO MY GRANNY
October 17, 2014
Dear Granny Fred:
Hello beautiful lady. How are you? As for me, I am doing very well.
Well Granny, I am now in my third year of college at Fullerton College and I want you to know that I am totally committed to success. With my strong desire, drive and determination I will fulfill my dream in no time.
You will be happy to know that I have taken control of my life and finally removed all the chaos that I was allowing to keep me from attaining my goals. With continued dedication, perseverance and a strong focus I will achieve the success I desire sooner than you know it. I want to thank you for being the liberal person that you are and for reminding me of my dream to go back and finish college. Increasing my knowledge has opened-up doors for great things to happen.
With sacrifice and hard work I have already attained my mid-term goal by supplanting my 2.8 grade point average to a 3.5 grade point average. I reached my mid-term goal with my short term goal of time management by using the skills that I learned in my reading course that I took in the fall semester of 2014. I wish I would have taken the reading course the first semester I started college. But as you always say, “We live and we learn.”
Granny, I would like to thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for inspiring me to pursue my dream of going back to college. I have regained my self-confidence and I am certain my future efforts will be as equally successful and rewarding. Take care of yourself and write back soon. I miss you and love you very much.
With love always,
Your granddaughter Wendi

REFLECTION 3

Recently I was given a one weeks notice to move out of the house I had been living in for 5 years; therefore, I had to find a new place within a week, pack an entire house, and move. With this unexpected event it has made it very difficult for me to plan my week efficiently and actually stick to my plan. But, I manged to find a really nice new place and I packed and moved within one weeks time and still managed to keep up with my academics.

Looking forward for the week, mid-terms are here and I plan on using the skills that I have learned in my reading class to get an A on all of my mid-term exams.First, I plan on using the skill of organizing and categorizing to study for my marketing mid-term exam, to create a list of marketing strategies, marketing terms, consumer behavior, and a time-line for the history of marketing. Secondly, my plan is to use the skill of associating ideas so that I can remember new facts that are in relation to facts I have already learned to get an A on the mid-term exam for my business class. Thirdly, I plan on using mnemonic devices, such as a rhyme, to remember the formulas for solving math equations for my math class. Lastly, my plan is to use a variety of my sensory modes for my reading class and to learn how to use the SQR3 Reading Study System.

I can honestly say that I have already been successful using the skills I have learned in my reading class and I am certain that I get an A on each of my mid-term exams.

Blog Post #2

A few years ago I was talking with my Grandmother, whom I call Granny. She told me a story about my aunt; my Granny's oldest daughter, and how after she turned 40 years old she returned to college to get her masters in nursing. After my aunt accomplished getting her masters she went on  to became a successful head nurse at a prestigious hospital helping patients with heart conditions. My Granny continued telling me that after my aunt succeeded in getting her masters and began a successful career in nursing she was happier then she had ever been in her entire life.

At the end of my Granny's story she looked at me and she said, "I would like to see you happy and it's never to late to pursue and education. Hasn't that always been your dream? To go back to college and get a degree.?"

See, what happened to me after I turned 40 is I had lost touch with myself. I felt at times that I didn't know what I liked or disliked; what I wanted and didn't want. This happened to me after a lifetime of trying to please others, submerging myself in jobs that weren't a good fit, and forgetting to listen to my heart and remember my dreams. The story my Granny told me inspired me and reminded me of what I wanted in life once again.

Shortly after my focus was about going back to college to further my education to enable me to broaden my knowledge, get a degree, and deepen my critical thinking skills. Once I started on the road toward my goal, everything started to fall in place. Since making this commitment and staying focused on my goals, many opportunities started to develop. I finally figured out what I wanted in my life.

Thanks to my beautiful Granny I remembered my dream and nothing will stop me from achieving my goal.

My Life's Backpack

In my life's backpack I carry myself with compassion. I used to think at times that being compassionate to the needs of others was a hindrance and that I needed to carry my own life as I carry the lives of my friends and family. But, what I found out is that I was completely wrong in my thinking. I really recognized this after reading Mrs. Bogans Blog and what she wrote about from the book, "The Things They Carried." The part that hit home was this, "They often carried each other, the wounded and the weak." It took great compassion to do what those men did in the story.

When you are compassionate to others and when you yourself need compassion there are plenty of friends and family around to help you. On the other hand, when you neglect the compassion of others, you only lose and when you need compassion there is no one to found. You then become angry and you start hate. This is what happened to me. When I lost my compassion, that is when I lost my chance for a future of success. I wasn't able to find mental peace.

How I began was by removing the hindrances to compassion; the anger and the hatred I was feeling. This anger I carried in my backpack had to go. I then began to realize that as long as we live in this world we are bound to encounter problems.  I had to remember to have compassion and start to see the obstacles that I thought were in my way as an opportunity to improve my mind and then I again gradually regained my compassion for others.

The only way to be truly happy is to have compassion because the nature of a human being cherishes this above all else and is only second to love. Without compassion we can not truly love. So without one or the other we have nothing.

Since I began to carry with myself, compassion in my life's backpack, my mental state is full of purpose and nothing is going to stop me from achieving my goals. The main focus has now been about getting an education. The more educated I am the more I can help and be compassionate for others.

My educational goals may not appear to be focused on compassion since I am going to college to obtain an Entrepreneurship Associate in Science degree. With this degree my plan is to help small business people bring back the compassion for others in the workplace, which is something that I feel has been lost along the way. Since we spend most of our daily lives in the workplace there is a strong need for the workplace to be one that makes us happy. Therefore, compassion is an essential part of running a successful business. My plan is to help others become more compassionate when it comes to their employee. Because compassion brings happiness which is an effective way to improve all of humanity.
